Bachelor of Science in Actuarial Science 

Goal of the Programme
The overall goal of this programme is to prepare graduates/learners to meet the ever-increasing global demands for actuaries who are versatile, innovative and dynamic enough to cope with the pace of insurance evolution.

Expected Learning Outcomes of the programme
By the end of the programme the graduates should be able to:

  • Design insurance products, valuation of financial contracts and modelling of mortality and morbidity.
  • Interpret demographic and financial data to inform prudent decisions in national development.
  • Apply the principles, methods and techniques of Actuarial Science.
  • Carryout independent research in the field of actuarial science.

Admission Requirements
Candidates must satisfy the University's general admission criteria for undergraduate programmes. In addition, candidates must be eligible for consideration for admission into the degree of Bachelor of Science in Actuarial Science at the University by meeting the following minimum admission requirements:
i.    Must have an aggregate grade of C+ (C PLUS) in K.C.S.E. (or equivalent examination) and a minimum grade of C+ (C PLUS) in Mathematics/Physics and C+ in English/Kiswahili.
ii.    Be a holder of K.A.C.E certificate with a minimum of two principal passes and one subsidiary pass at A-Level, whereby one principal pass is either in
•    Mathematics or
•    Physics with credit pass in Mathematics at O-Level; or
iii.    Must have at least a Credit Pass in Diploma in Actuarial Science, or a related Diploma from an institution recognized by the Senate, plus a minimum grade of C- (C Minus)

Grading System
Each course shall be graded out of a maximum of 100 marks and the pass mark for each course shall be 40 percent. Marks shall be translated into letter grades as follows:-
70 – 100%        A
60 – 69%        B
50 – 59%        C
40 – 49%        D
39 % and below        F
